Mon State releases 670 prisoners, including 31 political prisoners

According to sources close to the prison, 670 prisoners from various prisons and detention centers in Mon State were released under an amnesty initiative, including 31 political prisoners.

The released include 65 male prisoners and 38 female prisoners from Kyaikmarraw Prison, 231 male prisoners and 119 female prisoners from Mawlamyine Prison, 93 male prisoners from Thaton Prison, and 35 female prisoners from Moke Pa Lin Manufacturing Camp. Additionally, 41 prisoners were released from Ingapo and Taungzun work camps, as well as 17 male prisoners  from the Zin Kyaik Labor Camp, 20 from the Yin Nyein Work Camp and 11 from the Inn Byaung Work Camp.

Those released were required to sign a bond stating that they will not commit any further crimes. If they do, they will have to serve the remainder of their previous sentence.

“Among those released from Kyaikmarraw prison are 11 males and 12 females who were convicted under Section – 505 (a) of the Anti-Terrorism Act.  Similarly, 8 males convicted under Section – 505 (a) from Thaton prison were added,” said a person close to Kyaikmarraw prison.

He added that none of those released under the  amnesty initiative include persons convicted of drug offenses.

The military junta announced on December 4rth that 9,652 prisoners imprisoned in various prisons in Myanmar have been released with reduced sentences to mark the 76th anniversary of Independence Day.

In addition, it has been announced that 114 foreign prisoners have been pardoned and deported.

According to the latest statement by the Association for the Assistance for Political Prisoners (AAPP), in the nearly three years of the military coup, about 25,730 Mon State civilians have been arrested, and about 600 remain arrested.
