According to local residents, the cost of electricity per unit in Khaw Jae, Ye Township, south of Mon State has increased to 2090 kyats.
In Khaw Jae city, electricity was priced at 1,800 kyats per unit until August 2023, when it increased to 2,090 kyats per unit, as reported by locals.
A local resident said, “When gasoline prices went up, we had to pay 1,800 kyats per unit. However, this month, gasoline prices have already fallen, yet the cost of electricity per unit has increased. It’s inconvenient for us to bear this price hike. Some people can’t afford the increased cost and have had to disconnect their electricity. There are also people resorting to solar power.”
According to the local, rising electricity prices are causing difficulties for residents in Khaw Jae Township, where U Aung Kyaw San distributes and sells electricity through a self-help system.
“I don’t use an iron, and I don’t use water either. Three or four lights are turned on, and the bill is 40,000 per month. I can’t even afford food, and I don’t know how to read the meter unit, so they charged me about ten extra units. I have to pay without any money. Collecting extra units is something that some people cannot afford. It affects many people in the village,” said a local resident.
Starting from October 1st in Ye Township, the price of gasoline will be as follows: 92-Octane at 1995 kyats per liter, 95-Octane at 2200 kyats per liter, ordinary diesel at 2335 kyats per liter, and premium diesel at 2380 kyats per liter.
In Ye Township, where the main power line does not reach, electricity distribution is being done by a private company and a self-help system in the village.
