Former Mon State Prime Minister Dr Aye Zan has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for nine counts of corruption.
The sentence was handed down on May 16 in a special court held inside Kyaikmaraw Central Prison.
Dr Aye Zan was sentenced to 12 years in prison for six counts of corruption, and received another 7 years for additional cases.
Dr. Aye Zan is also currently on trial for three counts of abuse of power and embezzlement during the election.
The State Administrative Council (SAC) had filed nine separate cases under Section 55 of the Anti-Corruption Law, alleging that Dr. Aye Zan took money from business people during his tenure as Prime Minister.
It was alleged that he received more than 5,690 lakh kyats in exchange for permission to extract sand from the Salween River. According to the Nasaka Council, the government lost more than 1,320 lakh kyats due to the reduction of mineral tax in the sand mining project.
The Mon State High Court in April of last year also filed a case under Section 55 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) alleging that the former Prime Minister defrauded the state of non-payment of 20 million kyats from the Covd-19 fund.
Last December, Dr Aye Zan was charged under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code and sentenced to two years in prison.
The total prison time he is expected to serve amounts to 23 years.
