Starting on July 29, people 65 and over were given first priority to receive COVID-19 vaccines across Mon State, Myanmar.
The elderly are part of a priority group eligible to participate in Myanmar’s vaccination program. Others who will be the first to get vaccinated include, government and private healthcare workers, Parahita workers and volunteers, people residing at Elderly house, monasteries and other religious places, staff from government departments, private banks, factory workers, hotel staff, transportation workers as well as those in prisons, and those working in markets and supermarkets.
“Here, people have started receiving vaccines. People 65 years old and over are a prioritized group. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), and everyone should get it when there is opportunity for that. It’s necessary for everyone to get vaccinated. As long as there is COVID-19, we cannot do anything. It will become more harsh…and the political situation is also not stable,” said Nai Min Latt, of Thanbyuzayat COVID-19 Prevention Group, in an interview with MNA.
5 different locations are being set up as part of a 21-day vaccination program in Ye Township. According to Nai Aung Naing Win, a Parahita (community) worker, “These will operate daily and prioritized groups will be the first to receive the vaccine. The program will operate from 9 AM to 4 PM.”
The COVID-19 vaccines clinics in Ye Township are located at the hall of Ye Township General Administration Office, the Dhama Hall in Ye Town’s Thiri Nandar Ward, B.E.H.S (branch) Annawa Ward, and Ahzin Village’s Walulin, Dhama Hall. Those in prison will receive vaccinations at police’s detention centers.
Each of Mon State’s 10 townships will receive enough vaccines for 9,000 persons.
Other regions of the country are also setting up vaccine clinics.
“A lot of people come to get the vaccines. Since the cases have increased, the people want to get vaccinated. It’d be great if everyone has it,” said a resident of Ye Township.
As of July 22, Myanmar received 2 million COVID-19 vaccines from China, which will be distributed to 3.2% of the country’s population, according to Reuters News.
