3 dead in Spring Revolution in Mon State’s Mawlamyine

There have been 3 deaths to date, in Mon State’s capital city of Mawlamyine as a direct result of the army and police forces firing upon peaceful protests to the coup.

What is being referred to now as the Spring Revolution is taking place in cities and towns across Myanmar, and has been a daily event since February 1. 

The Mawlamyine protest was stopped when security forces opened fire on the unarmed protestors. Yet, other forms of protests have been conducted, including sit-in protest and motorbike riding. 

3 young male adults were shot dead in Mawlamyine Capital. The fallen are Maung Htauk Tun, Maung Zin Myo Thu, and Maung Htet Wai Htoo.

Maung Htauk Tun was shot in the neck on February 28, in the Zaykyo Ward. He was seriously injured and lost his life on March 16.

Maung Zin Myo Thu, 21, was also shot on February 28, in Zaykyo Ward, and Maung Htet Wai Htoo, 23, was shot in the head, in Thiri Myaing Ward, on March 3.

The police and military were seen using sonic weapons (aka sonic grenades) as well as tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition. 

An unknown number of protestors were injured and arrested. Authorities have not disclosed any numbers. 

According to the records from the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), between  February 1 to March 17 there have now been 217 deaths. The number of the people arrested and charged is 1, 872.
