The Chair of the National League for Democracy (NLD) committee based in Three Pagodas Pass (TPP), near the Thai-Myanmar border, was released just before noon of February 7, 2021, by the local police force.
U Than Lwin, was arrested along with Vice-Chair, U Tin Win Oo for the NLD by security forces on February 6.
“U Than Lwin was released about 15 minutes to 12 PM today [Feb. 7]. Three people [in total] were released but with a pledge. They are no longer allowed to lead and to organize any gatherings. But we will continue the protest to have the military dictatorship fall,” said a leading person with TPP’s NLD.
The arrest was made in the evening of February 6, following a group action that was praying for the release of NLD’s leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The prayer action took place in the mid-town’s garden area and individuals were lighting candles and then marching through the town.
“U Than Lwin was released with the pledge of two witnesses. The charges for the arrest are still [proceeding], and he will be arrested again if he organizes another gathering,” said a person who was monitoring the case as it unfolded at the police station.
Thousands of people have staged protests across Myanmar including in the major cities of Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay.
