It is important that more Mon women get elected in the upcoming 2020 election, urged Mi Kon Chan Non, an organizing committee member of the 16th celebration of Mon Women’s Day.
Mi Kon Chan Non said “we must prioritize women’s participation in the 2020 election and get more women elected into politics.”

The 16th Mon Women’s Day celebration was held at Thanlwin Park in Mawlamyine on the 5th of March. In attendance was the Mon State Hluttaw Chairperson Daw Thin Thin Ei, representatives from the New Mon State Party (NMSP) and the Mon Unity Party (MUP), as well as members of the Mon Women’s Network.
“In social activism, we can see a lot of female leaders. We also find many women are taking a leading role. However, we are not satisfied with this progress, we still need to try various ways to encourage more women to join in,” Mi Kon Chan Non added.
The Mon Unity Party has a representation rate of 13% for women and two women are involved in the central committee of the New Mon State Party.
Mon Youth Progressive Organization Chairperson Mi Maraoh Son said “in terms of women’s role, no matter the percentage of women involved, whether in peace or politics, the percentage of women in decision-making roles is still low.”
The Mon’s Women Day is celebrated on the 12th Waxing of Tabaung, on the Birthday of the Mon Queen, Shin Sawbu. The event strives to encourage women to become more involved in leadership and decision-making roles.
