Existing parties do not need to be abolished after merging two Mon parties

-

Existing parties do not need to be abolished after the All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMDP) and the Mon National Party (MNP) merge, the AMDP joint secretary (1) Nai San Tin said.

“We will proceed with the party registration issue in accordance with the law after the two parties merge. The existing parties don’t need to be abolished after the parties merge. We will sign at the Election Commission when the parties merge. Then, we will give a new name to the party after the commission allows the merger,” said Nai San Tin.

He continued that the party constitution, flag, and emblem have to be submitted to the Union Election Commission and it will be carried out in accordance with the Political Parties Registration Law and bylaw.

The MNP general secretary Nai Layih Tamarh said the leaders of the two parties met for the third time on June 30 and reached an agreement on the principle of sharing the responsibilities.

“Concerning the issue of designating a new name for the party, which has been agreed in the previous meeting, we will seek suggestions from the Mon public,” he said.

Both parties will set down the responsibilities that they have to share and select a name for the new party during their fourth meeting on July 21.

Officials from both parties said the public can give their suggestions to their party offices in respective townships and also to the Facebook pages of respective parties within two weeks until July 15.

Five-point agreement has been reached on merging the two parties and the party merge issue will be completed after both parties have approved the new name and selected the party leaders, the central executive committee members and central committee members. The two parties will follow procedures to register the new party at the Union Election Commission and receive recognition from the commission, according to the officials of both parties.

The Mon party merger implementation committee comprises five representatives of the MNP, namely vice-chair Nai Tin Aung, general secretary Nai Layih Tamarh, Nai Soe Myint, Nai Tun Pe, and Mi Kyal Kyal Nyi and five representatives of the AMDP, namely vice-chair Nai Chan Toi, Dr Banyar Aung Moe, Nai Lwi Aung, Nai Kyan Yit, and Mi Lwi Han.

Three delegates from each party met seven times since early 2018 to discuss the party merger. The party merger implementation committee was established with five representatives from each party and meetings were held at the AMRDP headquarters in Mawlamyine.
