Reported by Nai Sai, Dr. Min Soe Linn has pledged that he will work towards the termination of the coal-fired power

project planned for construction in Anndin Village, Ye Township, after he is elected as the township’s representative.

Dr. Min Soe Linn is the General Secretary of the Mon National Party (MNP) and, as a candidate of the MNP, he is now competing for a constituency in Ye Township in the 2015 elections.

He gave his words in front of more than 200 participants at a meeting held by Towards Ecological Recovery and Regional Alliance (TERRA) and the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM), at a monastery in Anndin Village, Ye Township, Mon State.

“Like our MNP, I also do not accept this project of coal-fired power. After becoming the representative for the people, I will stand with the people firmly and stop the project,” said Dr. Min Soe Linn.

Dr. Min Soe Lin continued to say that he was always against the government’s unsystematic work.

“The Mon Hluttaw representatives always give promises before they become the representatives. But after becoming the representatives, they forget what they promised the people. We would like this to be explained to the people too,” said Nai Lwin, a leader of the local youth group, in response to Dr. Min Soe Linn’s discussion.

Dr. Min Soe Linn replied that he would do as he promised and would like everyone to observe what his past actions.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed between the government and Toyo Thai Company, to construct the coal-fired power project plant that is capable of producing 1280 megawatts of electricity.

The power plant will be able to operate for 30 years once it is in operation, and 2.8 billion USD will be invested for the construction.

The local people have protested against the project, citing worries of the negative impact the plant could cause to farmlands, fishing and the environment, as well as instigating several kinds of diseases.

“We are very worried with the issue of the coal-fired project. Are those who asked for this project the Mon Hluttaw representatives?,” said a 40-year old Anndin Villager.

Dr Min Soe Linn is now as a candidate of the MNP, going to compete for the Ye Township constituency of State Hluttaw. Before being elected, he will have to compete against the candidate of All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP).

Dr. Min Soe Linn competed in the 1990 elections, and won for the constituency of Ye Township, his birthplace. As a general secretary, he has been working for his party more than 26 years although the party name has been changed from Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF), founded in 1988, to Mon Democracy Party(MDP), established in 2012, and finally to the name of the Mon National Party (MNP) in 2014.
