show that Burma has a total population of 51.41 million; 24.8 million of which are men and 26.5 million are women.
Census results, which were released last Saturday, also indicated that the most populous place in Burma is found in Rangoon Division, with 7.55 million people, followed by the Irrawaddy Division, with 6.175 million, and Mandalay Division, with 6.145 million.
Census results further conclude that Karenni State is the least populous, compared to other areas across the country.
In regards to population density, across Burma there are 76 people per square kilometer. The most densely populated region was found in Rangoon, while Kachin and Chin States are the most sparsely populated.
The average household has 4.4 people, and areas that have the most members per household are found in Kachin and Chin States, while households with the least number of people are found in Naypyidaw City, and Magway, Pegu, and Irrawaddy Divisions.
The preliminary census results stated that Burma’s total population is 51.41 million, without counting Burmese citizens living abroad [ but government’s embassy’s staff] and citizens who were not able to be reached for census polling in some areas of Maungdaw,Mrauk U, and the Sittwe district of Arakan State.
At an August 30th press conference held in Rangoon, Minister U Khin Yi of the Ministry of Immigration stated that the information used for the census questionnaire, as well as the 41 points addressed while collecting census data, will be revealed in May 2015.
According to the United Nations, every country must collect a census once every decade, in order to measure the country’s development and the increase of its population. According to UNFPA, 200 countries have conducted a census of their populations since 2005.
