Min Thu Tha – The All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP) said that it is preparing for the 2015 elections at a press conference held on the last day of the AMDP Annual Convention.
The AMDP Annual Convention was held from 24th-25th May at New Sky Hall in Than Lwin Garden in Moulmein, the capital of Mon State. It was the first time the AMDP had held an annual convention.
Dr Min Nwe Soe, the General Secretary of the AMDP said: “We contested [the election] in 2010, but we had a limited amount of time and so were not quite well enough prepared. We did not even get the chance to hold a party convention. [At this year’s annual conference] we discussed how we would contest the 2015 election.”
Out of the 35 AMDP representatives contesting the 2010 election 16 won seats in parliament.
At the AMDP Annual Convention Nai Sek was chosen and appointed to be the new party chairman while Nai Chan Htoy, Min Khin Maung Yin and Nai Chan Nai were appointed as new executive committee members.
Another Mon political party the newly named Mon National Party (MNP), which until recently was called the Mon Democracy Party (MDP), has yet to start preparing for the 2015 elections according to the MNP General Secretary Dr. Min Soe Lin.
He said: “We are still setting up our party’s sign boards after changing to the new name of MNP. Only two former members of the AMDP have joined the MNP. They are the former AMDP chairman Nai Ngwe Thein, (aka Nai Janu Mon) and the former AMDP executive committee member Nai Chit Oo.”
The MNP officially registered as a political party on 28th March 2014. The AMDP has been registered since 24th May 2010.
