Italian-Thai Promotes Tavoy Port by Flying in Prospective Investors

-

By LAWI WENG :  The Italian-Thai Development Construction, which initiated building on the Tavoy Port (Dawei Port) in Burma, has offered free services to Thai businessmen to travel to Burma, according to sources close to the Thai businessmen.

A female Thai-Mon businessman, who owns a large resort in Sangkalaburi, Kanchanaburi Province, and has visited the Tavoy Port said, “They arranged for us all elements of travel. They flew us to Rangoon, and once we got off the flight in Rangoon, they then flew us on another flight to Ye township in Mon State. After that, we took the bus to the port.”

“They give us free food and accommodation as well,” she explained.

About 75 Thai businessmen and women visited the port in December. This was the first time they were invited by the Italian-Thai Development Construction firm to invest in the port.

“When we arrived at the port, the company took us around to the areas they wish to sell. It is a huge economic zone.  They told me to invest in a resort there, as they know that I have a resort in Sangklaburi already. But, I feel like I am too old to start an investment there.”

“I found over a hundred Thais working there. They said the land is beautiful and can be a huge economic investment zone.”

She explained that the Italian-Thai Development Construction firm has invited her to travel to Burma again on January 19th.

Investment in the Tavoy Deep Sea Port began in 2008 by the Italian-Thai Development Construction Firm. Besides construction for tourism purposes, a four-lane highway between Kanchanaburi Province and the Tavoy Port will be constructed to facilitate materials transport.

By constructing this highway, material transport that is normally forced to go by ship through the Malacca Strait in order to reach the Andaman sea will be allowed a more  direct and faster shipments of goods by going on land.

While the Italian-Thai firm is flying investors into the Tavoy Deep Sea Port area to scope out areas for construction building, the highway will begin construction in 2013.
