Nai Hongsar elected Chair of NMSP

-

At the recent 10th New Mon State Party [NMSP] central committee conference Nai Hongsar was elected to the position of Chair of the NMSP.

Other newly elected top leaders include Vice-Chair Nai Aung Min, General Secretary Nai Joi Yaet, Joint-Secretary Nai Win Hla, and Deputy Commander in Chief Col. Banya Mae San along with Central Executive Committee members Nai Layi Gakao, Nai Aye Mon, Nai Banya Lel and Nai Aung Ma Ngay.

Political observers noted that despite this change in leadership (former Chairman Nai Htaw Mon resigned due to health issues), overall the NMSP policy has not substantially changed. Former leaders have instead simply been promoted to a higher rank.

Thirty-three central committee members and five reserve committee members were also elected, including two female central committee members.

Apart from these changes in the top leadership positions District committee members and township committee members were re-elected by the confidential voting system.

The New Mon State Party [NMSP] was formed on July 20, 1958, by Chairman Nai Shwe Kyin. A central committee conference has been held every four years since 1985. Nai Hongsa is the fifth chairman of NMSP.

The New Mon State Party emerged out of the Mon Peoples Front (MPF) in August 1948.
