Drug user kills 95-year-old man; seriously injures others

-

In the early morning of September 15th, a drug user slashed a 95-year-old man’s throat with a sword and left others injured in Kyaung village, in eastern Ye Township, Mon State, southern Myanmar.

According to the Ye Town police report, Aung Thin Win (aka) Late Pu, 46, was being verbally abusive in front of U Yoe’s house in the early morning of September 15. He has been found guilty of using a long sword to cut the throat of 96-year-old U Thea (aka) U Dai, who tried to calm him down. U Thea was found dead on the spot.

Late Bu attempted to flee the scene and attacked a 70-year old, local snack vendor U Maung Pe, leaving the man with serious injuries, including a cut on the right jaw and on the right side of the head and beneath the ear. Late Bu has been charged with murder and causing grievious injury under the Mayanmar Penal Code.

Ye Taw Win Newsletter chief editor U Aung Naing said “the perpetrator is said to use, as well as sell drugs. The only thing I am sure about is the drug effect makes [him] lose [his] mind and become crazy. [He] tried to stab other people while [trying] to escape. But he was then caught near Ko Yin Lay temple.”

Police arrested Aung Thin Win (aka) Late Bu, who lives in Kyauk Mee Kyaung village tract at 9 a.m. of September 15th in the Ko Yin Lay (temple) grounds and seized a Wave 100 motorcycle, approximately five Yaba tablets, and an OPPO mobile phone. He was also charged with drug possession under Section 16(c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

This was not the first incident of violence involving Late Bu.

“During the flood-hit in early August, the ward administrator U Soe Win tried to help [Late Bu’s] wife who was [being] abused by him. He then resisted the administrator and tried to cut him with a knife. U Soe Win had already reported [this incident] to police. But he [Late Bu] was released with a guarantee,” said U Aung Naing Win.

U Aung Naing Win noted local residents do not understand why Late Bu was not properly dealt with by authorities or why he would have qualified for a release guarantee, after abusing his wife and attempting to cut the ward administrator.

Apparently, following that incident, Late Bu had been charged under Section 332 of the Penal Code for causing harm to deter civil servants in their duties, as well as acting in a manner likely to cause harm but without criminal intent (Section 329 of the Penal Code) but he reportedly was released from custody according to the records from the Ye Town court.

A violent drug related crime also occurred in Wai Weng Karai village in Thanphyuzayat Township on April 4th, 2016 when 41-year old Nai Yone was believed to lose his sanity due to drugs and burnt down his house, killed six people with a sword, and left another six injured.
