Two Mon parties unlikely to meet with Mon representative party implementation group

-

The Mon National Party (MNP) and the All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMDP) have no plan to meet with the 21-member Group for Implementing the Mon Representative Party, according to both parties.

“We are not going to consider the letter they (21-member committee) have sent yet. We do not accept it or dismiss it, just temporarily postpone it,” said Min San Tin, joint secretary (1) of the AMDP.

He said Mon political parties are trying to complete the issues for holding the national-level political dialogue for the Mon people within a month since the New Mon State Party (NMSP) has signed the nationwide ceasefire agreement (NCA) so they have postponed the issue on meeting with the 21-member group.

Similarly, the MNP’s general secretary Nai Layih Tamarh said: “We are continuously holding discussions on the issue of merging the two parties. We will consider about meeting [with the 21-member group] after this party merger issue is over.”

He continued that it is difficult to estimate when the two parties will merge as it is a political issue and the two parties will continue to meet frequently.

The two parties will meet in a few days so they are unable to meet with the 21-member Group for Implementing the Mon Representative Party at the moment, he added.

Dr. Aung Naing Oo, the State Hluttaw MP and spokesperson of the 21-member Group, told Mon News Agency that his group sent letters to respective Mon political parties on February 26 to express their wish to meet with the political parties.

Over 800 representatives from various layers of Mon people including monks and politicians established the 21-member Group for Implementing the Mon Representative Party during the Mon Political Conference in January targeting to establish a political party that represents the Mon people.
