Around 6,000 chickens from Thailand seized in Mon State’s capital

-

The Mon State Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department, the Livestock Federation, and local authorities have seized around 6,000 illegal poultry farm chickens, which are imported from Thailand with four trucks, in the Mon State’s capital Mawlamyine on March 6.

“Our informer from Myawaddy reported to me last night that seven poultry farm chicken trucks will be coming from Thailand. I told the situation to respective livestock/veterinary department and poultry farmers. We gathered a group of people at 2 am. We waited for the vehicles at Kwel Chan Kone Traffic Circle in Mawlamyine at 3 am. We seized four chicken trucks at 4 am. According to our preliminary inspection, there are over 5,800 chickens,” U Nyo Min, secretary of the Mon State Livestock Federation, told the Mon News Agency.

The Mon State Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department’s director Dr Aung Than Win said the business license for importing poultry farm chickens and pigs from foreign countries can be applied to Myanmar Investment Commission after submitting claims of being free from diseases and endorsements from the distribution area.

“They [the chickens] just came in without any documents. We can’t say they are disease-free. That’s why we have sent their samples to the laboratory,” said Dr Aung Than Win.

Blood plasma sample of the seized chickens have been sent to the laboratory and they will be destroyed if they are found to have infectious diseases. If they are free from diseases, the chickens will be sold on an auction.

Dr Tin Htay from the Mon State Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department have filed a case under Section 23 of the Animal Health Law and take action against the seizure of illegal chickens after submitting the case directly to the court.

The Mon State has seized the import of illegal pigs from Thailand 16 times since early 2018 and this is the first time poultry farm chickens have been seized.
