Approximately 526 vehicles were seized during March 16 to April 5 for driving offenses across Mon State, prior to the Thingyan (Water) festival celebrations, according to Mon State Police Force.
There are three periods creating security concerns for the Thingyan festivals; the first pre-Thingyan period, the second is during the festival and third is post festival.
“Of the seized cars and motorbikes, mostly were ones installed with loud exhausts,” said Official Win Aung, Chief of Mon State Police Force.
Win Aung added that it is important to avoid youth violence and car/motorbike accidents. Everyone must cooperate and do what’s right to maintain our culture. Ultimately then, every family will be happy and welcome the new year in a peaceful way. Additionally, the president and government will be respected globally if the Thingyan festival is harmonious.
Amongst the seized vehicles are 21 cars, 15 motorbikes with side carts and 490 motorbikes.
The owners of these vehicles will be fined and face charges after the festival celebration period. The same treatment will apply to similar infringements during the festival.
Last year, 453 motorbikes were seized. 398 broke the law and 55 motorbikes used loud exhausts. Two no-licensed cars were also seized, as well as 17 infringing trucks.
