Methamphetamine pills destroyed at 69th Mon National Day

-

More than 1700 methamphetamine tablets were incinerated by the New Mon State Party (NMSP) during 69th Mon National Day events in the ethnic armed group’s administered districts of Thaton and Moulmein.

“As is our policy, [the NMSP] will continue to arrest and stop drug dealers and users. But this depends on our people and how much we can work on the cases. If more locals inform us about drug dealing, we can arrest more drug dealers or users. We have to do this because we are worried about our Mon youths. We will provide education and rehabilitation to those who are arrested,” said Lieutenant Colonel Htaw Non of Thaton District’s Battalion (2).

He added that young adults and women were among those detained in NMSP-administered areas for drug-related crimes.

The NMSP reported making 106 drug-related arrests in its Moulmein District in 2015 and seizing 706 methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as “Ya Ba.” This year in NMSP’s Thaton District, more than 1,000 methamphetamine pills have been confiscated and 14 drug offenders were arrested.

“For the sake of young people, NMSP destroyed the drugs at Mon National Day. The [other] youth also set up a committee to support Mon students and, in the near future, youths from respective villages will work on setting up their own committees,” said Nai Htaw Seik, a resident of Kaw Gay village.

Mon National Day fell on February 24 this year, with the central celebration held on Mon State’s Bilu Gyun [Island], in Kalaw village of Chaungzone Township. In NMSP-administered areas in Karen State, the Thaton District hosted events in Kaw Gay Village, Kawkareik Township and the Moulmein District held celebrations in Taung Pauk Village of Kyarinnseikkyi Township.

Festivities also took place in [other] NMSP and government-controlled areas throughout Mon State, as well as in other parts of Karen State, Mandalay, Rangoon and Tenasserim regions. Mon populations residing abroad also commemorated the 69th annual event in Thailand, South Korea, Australia and the U.S.
