The golden jubilee of the Mon Literature and Culture Committee was held last Sunday in Tala Htaw Hall on the Mawlamyine University campus.
More than 700 people attended the event including the university’s rector, Mon State Electricity Minister, professors, current students and alumni.
“For fundraising, we sell Mon traditional dresses and calendars. We celebrate this 50th Anniversary to recognize the work of former students who, while studying, also supported the Literature and Culture Committee,” said Nai Kyaw Khine Win, vice-chairman of the event’s organizing committee.
“We organized this ceremony to have current and former students meet. As part of their introduction, they can discuss the future of this committee and its work,” said Ko Win Bo, who is Information Officer of the organizing committee.
At the ceremony, popular ethnic Mon artists performed and events included literature talks and Mon traditional dances. Presenters also modeled the evolution of five decades of traditional Mon clothing.
“I am very happy to see this 50th Anniversary and to discover that almost everybody here is Mon. I wanted to come here and perform because this ceremony is our Mon ceremony,” said Mi Amara, an ethnic Mon singer who performed at the event.
The Literature and Culture Committee at Mawlamyine University was founded in 1966 to preserve Mon literature, language and culture.
