AMDP’s candidate faces protests during campaign

Reported by Guiding Star, An All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMDP) candidate, Mi Myint Thant, experienced protests during her party’s campaign in Anndin

Village, Ye Township, Mon State, on November 5.

The protests occurred during AMDP’s campaign in Anndin Village, Parlian Region,Ye Township, where signs reading “No Mi Myint Thant” were written on papers held by local and set up.

“From Ye Town, we go to Anndin [village]. From Anndin, we continue to Pee Village. That’s when we return and at the centre of Anndin Village and at junction road to Sanit Karot Village, where we find pamphlets of Mi Myint Thant, lying on the ground. Some of them are partially burnt. After we pick up the pamphlets, we continue to Sanit Karot Village,” said Nai Lin Naing Oo, who participated in the AMDP’s campaign.

The AMDP campaign trip to Parlian region included about 100 members of the AMDP and its five main candidates, namely Nai Chan Htoy, Nai Ouksar, Nai Thant Ko, Mi Lawi Han, and Mi Myint Thant. Although AMDP planned to campaign in Sanit Karot Village, the trip was cancelled and all vehicles heading to Sanit Karot returned before reaching the village.

“We do not want Mi Myint Thant. Apart from her, we welcome all other candidates. We do not see our villagers doing this as wrong,” said a villager from Anndin Village.

Mi Myint Thant, also known as Mi Poin Seik Htaw, won elections in 2010 as AMDP candidate in Ye Township and became Pyithu Hluttaw representative. For the 2015 election, she is to compete for the Amyotha Hluttaw representative at constituency No. 8 of Ye Township.
