Reported by Guiding Star, Mon teachers from Mon national schools in Kyaikmayaw Township still receive only

20,000 Kyat per month, with the salary being supported by Mon National Education Committee (MNEC).

“The committee for education budget already suggested that in respective areas, in order for teachers to receive 50,000 Kyat, the locals should help support them. But, in our area, it is not like other areas such as Mudon and Thanbyuzayat townships. We are not able to collect support from locals. We only receive a 20,000 Kyat salary from the [Mon] education department,” said Mi Aie Non Chan, a vice principal of a Mon National Middle School in Kaw Won Village.

In the 2014-2015 academic year, 100,000 Kyat was donated for Mon teacher salaries from the local organization. Together with salary budget support from MNEC, each teacher was paid 30,000 Kyat per month during the 2014-2015 academic year.

“It is difficult to collect money [donation] from locals because some send their children to government schools and some send children to Mon national schools. It is okay to gather money from the parents who have their children studying at Mon schools. But it is not okay for the parents whose children are studying at government schools and they won’t offer if we request for the money,” said vice principal, adding that the school committee has reported the low pay to respective groups responsible for the school budget, but so far there have been no advancements.

Mon national schools in Kyaikmayaw Township are under administration of Thaton District of New Mon State Party (NMSP). Although an education supporting group from the district has planned to increase the payment for the teachers, so far it is yet to be successful. Although Mon national schools in Kyaikmayaw Township are close to the NMSP’s Thaton District, unlike other schools in Mudon and Thanbyuzayat townships, it’s not easy to manage a salary raise yet, according to Nai Soe Ni, who is a former member of NMSP’s Moulmein District.

Although a school building for a Mon national primary school in Karot Kaphon Village was built by Mawlamyine Cement Ltd costing 400,00000 Kyat, the teachers’ salary receive 20,000 Kyat per month same as the salary for the teachers teaching at Mon national middle school in Kaw Won Village.

“We only get 20,000 Kyat as salary per month. Last year, we also got 20,000 Kyat per month,” said the principal of Mon school in Karot Kaphon Village.

Kyaikmayaw township, most Mon schools are integrated with government schools, and there is only one Mon national middle school and two Mon national primary schools.
