campaign, Mon residents in Ye Township have decided to establish a support group.

The decision to form Support Group for Victory in Elections (Ye Township) was made on August 11, at their conference of United All Mon Nationals of Ye Township held at Mon Hall in Ye Town, with more than 200 representatives, including Mon monks, Mon activists, and residents from four regions across Ye Township.

“Because there is no possibility for the two Mon political parties to negotiate a merger, some [Mon activists] suggest to compete in the elections as individual candidates. But in the end, as M23 decided, we agreed to select candidates from the two parties’ who we think might be good,” said Ko Soe, a participant from Ye Town.

“It was decided that 20 candidates, comprised of five candidates from each of the four regions in Ye Township, will be selected. At the moment, we have only chosen one leader per region from the representatives of the four regions,” said Min Ye Mon, who is also a spokesperson of the [main] Independent Mon National Support Group for Victory in Elections, known locally as M23, [as it was founded with 23 Mon members ] and a resident of Lamine Town, northern Ye Township.

It is the objective of the Independent Mon National Support Group for Victory in Elections to maximize the Mon representation at the post-poll Hluttaw [parliament]. The M23 already sent request letters to Mon parties and met respective Mon parties’ leaders, requesting that they collaborate with each other to have only one Mon candidate competing in each constituency in order create a united ballot and not to lose votes.

Due to the two leading Mon political parties, namely the All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP) and the Mon National Party (MNP), idleness in collaborating, Mon activists plan to promote individual candidates to compete in Ye Township. At the same time, the activists also informed the two Mon parties that they would only accept and vote for qualified and trustful candidates from the parties to compete in the township.

The preliminary candidate lists from the two Mon parties were announced and each party has five candidates to run for one constituency of Pyithu Hluttaw, two constituencies of Amyotha Hluttaw, and two constituencies of State Hluttaw, in Ye Township.

According to the candidate list from the Mon State Election Sub-commission, up to August 12, the sub-commission has only received five candidate submitted by the MNP for five constituencies in Ye Township. Contrary to the AMDP, which has submitted none.
