AMDP to attempt to have MP for Mon people in Tenessaserim Division

-

On Sunday (April 5th,2015), the All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP) decided at it’s central committee meeting that the party would support the move to have one parliamentarian for Mon ethnic people’s affairs in Tenasserim Division.

AMDP’s joint-secretary (1) Nai San Tin and spokesperson Nai Than Shwe will travel to Tenasserim Division during the 3rd week of April.

“Since there is a suitable number of the Mon population in Tenasserim Division, AMDP will travel there and meet with its party members to help in contesting the 2015 elections, as well as electing a MP for Mon people’s affairs” said Dr. Aung Naing Oo, AMDP’s central committee member.

AMDP will appoint its party members from the division for the upcoming elections and the elected party member will go on to represent Mon people.

There are 60,000 Mon people in the Tenasserim Division, but more than 30,000 do not have national ID cards, according to the Mon Population Data Project, confirmed at a press conference on February 2nd, 2015.

In Tenasserim, the majority of Mon people live in Yebyu Township, with the rest of the Mon population spread across the remaining 9 townships including Mergui, Tenasserim, Kawthaung, and Dawei.

Nai San Tin also told IMNA that an objective of gathering Mon population data was to get a precise number of the current Mon population.

At the party’s central committee meeting, it was decided that the number of the representatives of AMDP from respective townships must be submitted in order to participate in the 2015 election.

AMDP’s regular central committee meeting was held at the party’s headquarters in Moulmein, capital of Mon State.
