Fundamental Points Needed for Peace, Says NCCT Leader Nai Hongsar

-

Fundamental points must be met in order to achieve agreement for genuine peace, according to Nai Hongsar, leader of the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT).

“Every party, organization and person wants peace. Everyone wants to have peace [in Burma] as soon as possible, but to get agreement, it cannot be decided since there are no basic [fundamental] points yet; these points are very important,” said Nai Hongsar, in August 13th interview with IMNA .

Nai Hongsar continued that to achieve a peace agreement, the NCCT and the Union Peace-Making Working Committee (UPWC) will meet again on August 15-16th in Rangoon City.

The UPWC met with political parties for the first time on August 11th at the Myanmar Peace Center (MPC), whereupon the political parties released a statement calling for a political conference including any party that should be involved in Burma’s political discourse.

“[The conference] is to hold tripartite political dialogue after the government and ethnic armed groups sign for the nationwide ceasefire,” said Vice-Chairman of the Federal Union Party (FUP) Saw Than Myint, in an interview with IMNA.

It has been reported that the NCCT and various political parties will hold a meeting on this August 18th in Rangoon City.

According to U Hla Maung Shwe, senior advisor to the MPC, the NCCT has agreed to meet with political parties, as suggested by the UPWC at a recent informal meeting between the NCCT and the UPWC held in the Myitkyina capital of Kachin State.

“The upcoming meeting on August 18th [will] be in the form of [a] tripartite talk for the first time. [Talks] will not include every party, but U Aung Min [will] invite each representative [from] all parties based in ethnic areas,” said U Hla Maung Shwe.

According to remarks from President Office Minister U Aung Min, who also serves as Vice-Chairman of the UPWC, made at the meeting between the UPWC and political parties, the government wants to hold political talks, which must involve government, ethnic armed groups, political parties, and all of those who should be involved in political discussions, in early 2015.
