Min Thu Tha – The nationwide ceasefire will not be signed in August said Nai Hong Sar leader of the ethnic armed groups’ Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT) following talks with the Union Peace-Making Working Committee (UPWC).

He said that talk of signing the agreement in August was just government propaganda.

He said: “The key points of the ‘Single text Draft’ are yet to be negotiated by both sides. The government side do not even accept the term ‘federal’. There is no agreement between both sides about how to proceed after signing [the nationwide ceasefire agreement].”

He said that at the previous talks the UPWC representatives would not accept the establishment of a federal union with national equality and autonomy.

He said: “If we look at it generally, a federal union based on ethnic equality should be founded because ethnic unity is vital. The president and members of Hluttaw (parliament) are saying that domestic peace must be established, but in reality when we have discussions the army refuse to contemplate it.” [federal union]

Nai Hong Sar also said that the previous group of government representatives and the United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC) had had similar views at peace talks. But, after the NCCT was formed the views of many generals reverted to their previous tough stance.

Earlier this month Karen National Union (KNU) delegates met with the president and the Defense Chief, Min Aung Hlaing, in Nay Pyi Taw. They agreed that the nationwide ceasefire would be agreed within three months according to Burmese News outlets.

UNFC members will meet soon to discuss and analyze the Single Text Draft in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand.

The second round of talks about the Single Text Draft were held on 21st to 23rd May 2014 at the Myanmar Peace Centre on Shwe Lee Street in Rangoon.

The UPWC and NCCT have agreed to hold the third round of talks about the Single Text Draft in June at the Myanmar Peace Centre according to a joint statement they issued.
