Min Lyon – Myanamar Peace Monitor, a project run by Burma News international (BNI) launched its latest report: ‘Deciphering Myanmar’s Peace Process: A Reference Guide 2014’ at a conference at The Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT) in Bangkok on 7th May.

The report covered the period of 2013 to March 2014.

According to Ko Sai Lek, the program coordinator for the Myanmar Peace Monitor, the conference was targeted at journalists, international organizations and members of the public to raise awareness of issues affecting the peace process in Burma. Refugees, the government and ethnic armed groups were also discussed.

He said: “the benefit we got [from this launch] is that the attendees, who included international embassies’ officials and journalists, got to hear what happened at the peace talks and the political talks and what issues were discussed with the ethnic armed groups.

U Kun Sai was one of the speakers at the conference. He is also the managing director of the Union Institute and the founder of the Shan Herald Agency for News (SHAN).

He said that the experiences of groups participating in the peace process were discussed and attendees were told what has happened at this year’s peace talks.

He said: “The conference covered the peace talks; including the peace talks in areas where fighting is ongoing, conflicts in Rakhine State, religious conflicts and the bomb explosions that have occurred in several Yangon townships.

About 30 people attended the launch. They included international representatives, embassy officials, senior journalists and reporters.

U Kun Sai said not as many journalists as expected had attended because the launch happened on the same day as the removal of the Thai prime minister by the Constitutional Court.

In September 2013 BNI held a conference at the Myanmar Journalists Network office in Rangoon to launch their pervious report entitled: ‘Economics of Peace and Conflict.’ That report covered the period from 2011, when President Thein Sein took office and the peace talks first started, till mid 2012
