Khitar Non – Mon National Party (MNP) chairman Nai Ngwe Thein is taking a break from serving as party leader due to health reasons. His request to take leave was granted during an MNP executive committee meeting on April 27th. Nai Ngwe Thein is expected to have eye surgery soon.

Nai Soe Myint, a member of the MNP executive committee, said that although Nai Ngwe Thein had not been able to attend regular committee meetings he had been in frequent contact with his fellow party leaders.

“Sayar (teacher) can not see quite well with both his eyes. On this May 20th, there will be an operation on one eye. Whether the other eye is operated on in three months depends on the decision of the doctor,” Nai Soe Myint told the Independent Mon News Agency (IMNA).

Another senior party official Nai Htet Lwin, the MNP’s vice chairman has been receiving medical treatment in Singapore for gastric issues. Nai Htet Lwin is also taking a break from his party duties while he continues to stay in Singapore.

“ He was already discharged from the hospital. And he will come back to Burma during the 2nd week of May,” said Nai Htet Lwin’s daughter Mi Kon Chan.

The chairmanship of the MNP is now being held jointly by a group of party leaders from the 15 member central committee.
