Khithar Non – The Nationalities Brotherhood Federation (NBF) party is in the process of rewriting sections of the 2008 Constitution, according to Nai Ngwe Thein, Chairman of All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP) and NBF member.

“We, Nationalities Brotherhood Federation, will amend any points that are not working in federal union. And we also have decided to fix any points that are in opposition to democracy,” Nai Ngwe Thein said.

Dr. Min Nwe Soe, AMDP general secretary, said the NDF is looking into what changes need to be made to the Constitution. Once this is determined, the recommendations will be submitted to Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (Assembly of the Union).

NBF released a five-point statement on Oct. 13. One “calls for all stakeholders in the country to work towards the establishment of a federal union by making the necessary amendments to the 2008 Constitution”.

“If it is to fix (the constitution) as in the released statement, it is just like to write a new constitution,” continued Nai Ngwe Thein.

The Mon Democracy Party (MDP) is also reviewing points that may require amendments, but will independently submit their suggestions to Parliament.

The National League for Democracy (NLD) is currently conducting public opinion poll across Burma collecting opinions on whether parts of the Constitution should be amended or if it needs to be completely rewritten. The opposition party decided to conduct the poll after releasing a statement on Oct. 1 because the debate kept coming up during meetings with the NLD and ethnic parties. Party leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will present the findings to Parliament in November.
