Nippon Foundation to launch emergency aid in Mon and Karen areas

-

IMNA – During a visit to Japan last week by 19 representatives of the United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC), the Nippon Foundation agreed to provide USD three million in humanitarian aid to fund infrastructure, food, and medicine for refugees from Burma living on the border and in ethnic areas. The emergency aid program is set to begin next month.

Nai Hong Sar Bon Khine, an official of the New Mon State Party’s Foreign Affairs Department, was a participant in the trip organized by the Nippon Foundation and said, “Now, due to the transportation and geographic situation, the aid will preliminarily be provided to Mon and Karen areas. Meanwhile, negotiations regarding the provision of aid to other ethnic areas are underway, and will lead to delivery when finished.”

During the trip, Nai Hong Sar Bon Khine visited the Old Palace and studied Japanese cultural heritage, environmental conservation, and the municipal welfare of Japan. He said, “Japan has well-developed industries, science, and technology, but the Japanese are also able to preserve their cultural heritage at the same time. We should follow the example of Japan as we develop our new country.”

UNFC Secretary Nai Hong Sar explained, “The aid provided by the Nippon Foundation will be delivered to UNFC member areas and those not represented by UNFC membership, including Arakan and Southern Shan States.

In addition to providing humanitarian aid, the Nippon Foundation wants to mediate the peace processes between the Burmese government and armed ethnic groups. Although the Peace Making Committee led by Minister U Aung Min recently called for an informal meeting with the UNFC, an exact date has not yet been determined, according to Nai Hong Sar.

The UNFC was formed by 11 armed ethnic groups on February 16, 2011. With the exception of the Kachin Independence Organization, all UNFC members have signed ceasefire agreements with the Burmese government.
