Mon monks urge Mon political parties to unite by year-end

Nadi Mon – Mon monks urged the Mon Democratic Party (MDP) and the All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP) to unite before the end of 2012, said negotiation leader Senior Monk A-shin Kay Mar Nanda.

Seven participants from the MDP and three from the AMDP, together with Mon monks from the negotiating delegation, attended the meeting held on June 18 in Nandawun Mon Buddhism-schooling Monastery in Thanbyuzayat, Mon State.

“In the meeting, it was urged that the two parties not wait until 2014, but should unite in 2012,” said Senior Monk A-shin Kay Mar Nanda, the abbot and lecturer of Nandawun Mon Buddhism-schooling Monastery.

Responding to that appeal, Nai Soe Myint, central executive committee member of the MDP, said his party has been ready for the union.

Meanwhile, Nai Ngwe Thein (aka Nai Janu Mon), chairman of the AMDP, said, “I have personally agreed to unite the two parties. However, many in the party’s hierarchy haven’t made up their minds yet.”

A phone call to the AMDP office could not be made since the office’s phone was temporarily unreachable, sointerviews with party spokespersons were not held.

Early this year, on April 22, the MDP and AMDP representatives signed the four-point agreement stating that they would unite in December 2014.

However, the AMDP representatives state they only agreed to discussion about the union and were not granted the authority to sign the agreement, so they deny the validity of the April 22 arrangement, said a leader of the AMDP.

Mon armedethnic group the New Mon State Party and the Mon Affairs Union also called for the union of the two Mon political parties.
