Min Tao Lawi and Nai Mun – Nai Janu Mon, aka Nai Ngwe Thein, the current chairman of the All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP), told the Independent Mon News Agency (IMNA) yesterday that if the AMDP and the Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF) fail to unite into one party, he would resign from the AMDP.
“I’m a person who wants the unification of Mon nationals. I’ve already publicized [that]. In my party, members have splintered into two groups over the issue of party unification, and the members who do not support the union are the majority. After the Songkaran, negotiations will be held. If the union of the two parties can’t occur at that time, I’ll resign,” said Nai Ngwe Thein.
On March 24, prominent Mon senior monks invited representatives from the MNDF, who contested the 1990 election, and from the AMDP, who contested the 2010 election, to negotiate the union of the two Mon parties at the Hong Sar Htaw Buddhism-schooling Mon Monastery in Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State.
In attendance were Nai Janu Mon (aka Nai Ngwe Thein), Nai Tin Aung, the vice chairman of the NMDF, General Secretary Dr Min Soe Linn, Joint Secretaries Dr Min Kyi Win and Mon Raja (Min Soe Win), Joint Secretary of the New Mon State Party (NMSP) Nai Aung Min and Central Committee Member Nai Tala Nyi.
“I did not represent my party in that meeting. I just wanted to share my personal opinion,” stated Nai Ngwe Thein.
Official representatives of the AMDP were not sent to that meeting, and, according to a Mon senior monk, another negotiation will be held on April 22 in the Sarsanar 2500 Monastery, Moulmein.
