Salt business persons are at a loss as Pa-nga salt price declines

-

Ja-Loon Htaw, Independent Mon News Agency – Salt farmers in Pa-nga Village, Thanphyuzayart, Mon State, are suffering as the salt price has declined and because of the lack of demand for salt during the current salt-producing season.Earlier this month as new salt was produced, almost every salt producing business suffered a big loss, as merchants simply did not come to buy salt, said Nai Tin Aung a resident of Pa-nga who owns 30 acres of salt-plots.

“The salt price is only 65 kyat per viss (one viss = 1.63 kg). In the previous year, it was priced at 80 or 90 kyat per viss. The salt merchants didn’t purchase salt and they want to get salt with the lowest price,” Nai Tin Aung continued.

The salt from Pa-nga Village has now been transported to Ragoon and Upper-Burma.

In the salt-producing period of December 2010, many of the salt-plots in Mon State were destroyed by heavy rain.

“My loss showed about nine millions (kyat) last year. When the rain stopped, I dried (the wet salt) under the sunshine so I regained some of my investment. At the salt-producing period of this year, there was no purchaser yet so I have to store the salt,” added Nai Tin Aung.

He further added that (the profit) did not even cover the cost of hiring labor or the fee for gasoline used in machines, which transport seawater to the salt-plots.

In Mon State, Pa-nga Village, Thanphyuzayart Township is the main place of salt business. Ka-roke-pi Village, Kyaikami City, Setse Beach, Htan-ta-bin Village of Paung Township, and Pa-line-gee Village of Ye Township are also major producers of salt.

In Pa-nga Village 40 salt plants, both government and privately run, have occupied over 1,000 acre of salt-plots and have made the Mon State the largest salt-produced region.

The process of salt production generally begins in September. The solar salt is produced step by step – preparing salt-plots, building dykes, making partitions of salt-plots, raking salt-plots, rolling salt-plots and inputting salt water. The salt is produced in its final state between December and May of each year.
