Brotherhood of five ethnic state parties calls for nationwide ceasefire

-

Min Thuta – The brotherhood of five ethnic parties released a statement on 2 October to call for the immediate establishment of a peace workshop to precede a nationwide ceasefire. The statement also called on the Burmese government to immediately implement the release of all political prisoners.

The five ethnic parties held a meeting in Rangoon (Yangon) to release order No. 5/2011 with the seals of Phalon-Sawaw, a Karen ethnic party, the Chin National Party (CNP), the All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMDP), Rakhine Nationalities Development Party, and the Shan Nationalities Democratic Party (SNDP).

Nai Ngwe Thein, Chairman of AMDP, U Zo Zam, Chairman of CNP, U Saw Than Kyaw Oo, Chairman of Phalon-Sawaw, U Saw Than Myint from SNDP, and U Hla Saw signed the statement.

“The National Race Affairs and Internal Peace-making Committee does not have the involved persons, the followers of the government, who can practically implement a ceasefire. The committee should include representatives from our brotherhood of ethnic parties, representatives from the parliaments, scholars, and other persons of integrity, led by the new government,” Nai Ngwe Thein, Chairman of AMDP, said.

The National Race Affairs and Internal Peace-making Committee was formed mostly with USDP members at the Pyithu Hluttaw’s (People’s Parliament) second regular session on 5 September. Only four ethnic members from the brotherhood parties are involved in the committee.

“To reform the peace committee, to hold a peace workshop immediately, and to discuss the developments openly among the people are our aims,” said Nai Ngwe Thein.

He said that people are currently only able to half-believe that the new government is actually interested in leading Burma to become a truly democratic country.

The brotherhood of parties also demanded the immediate release of ethnic political prisoners, including Hkun Tun Oo and other ethnic leaders, student leaders who are behind bars, including Min Ko Naing, and all other political prisoners.
