USDP and AMDP Compete for Village Headman Positions in Mon State

By LAWI WENG – The junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and the main opposition party in Mon State, All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP) are struggling against each other to replace the new headman of villages throughout Mon State in April. 

An AMDP senior member in Mudon Township explained that both the USDP and AMDP are encouraging their own members to take village headman positions.

“It will be easy to run our party activities or campaigns if all of the head villagemen are our members,” said this AMDP member.

AMDP has prepared to run more campaign throughout the Mon communities, to create awareness of their party in preparation for the next elections in 2015.

“We have party activities to do in our communities to prepare for the next election,” said Nai Ngwe Thein, AMDP chairman.

He said that his party is waiting for the new government to set up before launching AMDP activities.

AMDP sources said that at every USDP meeting, the USDP leaders have encouraged their members to take village headman positions in Mon State.

The last time village headman were elected in Mon State was in 2008, with the majority elected at that time being USDP members.

Meanwhile, the current village headmen in Mudon Township, include Kamarwet, Kwan Hla, Doma, and Kalawthut villages, who do not want to leave their positions have begun to bribe Burmese authorities to maintain their status according to AMDP sources. These four village headman are all Mon.
