By Independent Mon News Agency -Mon revolutionary leader, Nai Htar Wa Ra, who struggled in the armed revolution for Mon freedom for over three decades, died today in the early morning, at the headquarters of the New Mon State Party (NMSP).

At 55 years old, Nai Htar Wa Ra passed away around two in the morning, according to Nai Tala Nyi, who is in charge of the NMSP liaison office.

“He was diabetic and had high blood pressure, making him tired and causing him breathing difficulties,” explained Nai Tala Nyi.

“Firstly, it will be difficult to replace him as one of the leaders of the NMSP,” said Nai Tala Nyi.

Nai Htar Wa Ra joined the NMSP in 1976, serving for two years, and then rejoined in 1981, serving for 32 years and fighting for the freedom of the Mon people from the Burmese government. In 2004, he was appointed as an executive member of the NMSP and he was reelected for the same position twice.

Nai Htar Wa Ra’s funeral date has not yet been set, but it is known that he will be buried at the NMSP headquarters in the military cemetery.

Three days before his death, Nai Htar Wa Ra gave a speech during the 64th Mon National Day celebration on February 19th. He, his wife, and two children moved to the jungle after the NMSP refused to join the Border Guard Force, working as a military unit for the Burmese regime, and instead the NMSP ended the ceasefire between its party and the Burmese government.

Nai Htar Wa Ra was born in 1956 in Kamarwat village, Mudon Township, Mon State.

Aye Con, an officer of the Mon National Education Department, said, “He had an open mind, and it was easy to deal with him while he was in charge of the Mon National Education Department.”

“He gained popularity after waging guerilla warfare with the Burmese military junta between the years of 1975 and 1978,” explained Nai Kao Rot, a comrade and former deputy army chief of the Mon National Liberation Army.”
