No Mon Candidates Elected as Head of Parliament in Mon State

By LAWI WENG – No Mon candidates were elected as head of the State’s Parliament in Mon State, yesterday, while the regime-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) members dominated with majority votes during the opening of the new parliament for the first time in 20 years in all Burma.

Nai Ngwe Thein, All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP) chairman, said that the AMDP’s candidate, Min Nwe Soe failed twice after he ran for chairman and then deputy chairman of the State’s Parliament.

“Nwe Soe only got votes from Mon candidates, which was only 7 votes, and his opposition, Kyin Pe from USDP got 24 votes for chairman.”

“Then, during the second round, running for deputy chairman, Nwe Soe got 8 votes and his opposition, Htay Lwin from USDP got 23 votes.”

Kyin Pe who was elected for constituency No.2 in Chaungzon Township was elected as chief of the assembly. Htay Lwin, who was elected in Kyaikto in constituency No. 1 as the assistant chief. Maj-Gen Ohn Myint, USDP chairman, who won the election in constituency No. 1, in Mudon Township, was elected chairman.

Parliament was held for only one hour, from 8:55 a.m. to 10 am, in which there were a total of 31 lawmakers in the Mon State Assembly. These included 11 USDP members, seven AMDP, two from the National Unity Party, eight from the military, and three are ethnic parliamentary representatives, Karen and Pa-O.

“They [USDP] had the majority. Our candidates could not beat them,” said Nai Ngwe Thein.

The parliamentary session was held in the Mawrawatty Garden, at the building site of the Mon State Peace and Development Council office in Moulmein.

The AMDP leaders said that they will stand as a main opposition party at the State Parliament in Mon State.

“As we are the opposition party, we can criticize them” Nai Ngwe Thein said.

USDP dominated the State Parliament’s of Shan State, Arakan, and Chin State as well yesterday.
