By RAI MARAOH : Maj-Gen Ohn Myint, chairman of the regime-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), who won the election in region 1 of Mon state, has held two meetings with All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP) officials to discuss joint cooperation for the development of Mon state.

AMDP chairman, Nai Ngwe Thein, participated in a meeting with Ohn Myint at the beginning of this month, and afterwards commented, “While we met him at the meeting, he told us how he has completed successful development in Mon State and what more there is to be done. He also said that the Mon party needs to work with his party.”

Ohn Myint is a retired Burmese army commander and a past minister of the State Peace and Development Council [former Burmese government – SPDC]’s regime.

“We just listened to what he had to say, but we have not responded yet. We need to deeply consider his suggestions,” Nai Ngwe Thein said.

Since the meeting, AMDP candidates have stated that they will support the proposal of joint cooperation with the USDP if it benefits Mon people.

The AMDP won 16 out of 34 positions for Mon State in the November 7th election. AMDP party leaders have claimed that many of their candidates lost due to advanced rigging of the votes.

The AMDP was the main opposition party of the USDP in Mon State. The AMDP won seven seats in the State Parliament while the USDP won 14.

The USDP won 77 percent of the seats in the election. USDP candidates have also advocated joint cooperation between their party and other ethnic candidates, like the Arakan and the Shan, in hopes of developing the ethnic states.
