Newly Elected Mon Candidates Heading to Naypyidaw to Join New Government

By LAWI WENG : Six candidates from the All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP) will travel to Naypyidaw, the new capital of Burma, to join the new parliament of Burma, according to the party’s leaders.

Nai Ngwe Thein, the chairman of the AMDP, said, “They (the junta) will hold a meeting on 27 January to form  the new government. They told our candidates to arrive on January 24 at Naypyidaw. Our candidates will leave from Moulmein on 19 of January.”

The six candidates from AMDP include Nai Hla Maung, Nai Thein Aung, Mi Myint Than, Nai Kyaw Thei, Nai Tun Own, and Dr. Banya Aung Moe. Three candidates  won seats in the People’s Parliament and three won from the National Parliament.

“We have prepared a lot of things to discuss at parliament,” said Nai Ngwe Thein.

AMDP won 16 seats in Mon State in the election, which ran a total of 34 candidates. Party leaders said many of their candidates lost due to the use of rigged advance votes.

The AMDP become the main opposition party of the the regime-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) in Mon State. The party won seven seats in the State Parliament while the USDP won 14 seats. The National Unity Party won two seats.

Many of the elected AMDP candidates are civil servants, and this is their first time in politics.
