MNDF joins with Aung San Suu Kyi in calling for a Second Panglong Conference

Jaloon Htaw : “The Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF) will join hands together with Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi to call for a Second Panglong Conference in order to form a genuine Federal Union,” explained Nai Tun Thein, chairman of (MNDF) to Aung San Suu Kyi of the National League for Democracy (NLD).

According to a woman from Mudon Town who attended the Mon National Day Celebration Committee on November 16th, the committee’s patron, Nai Tin Aung, reported to those gathered at the meeting the conversation that took place between Nai Tun Thein and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the meeting’s call for a second Panglong Conference.

On November 16th, pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and ethnic group leaders met at NLD headquarters in Rangoon (Yangon), and agreed to call for a Second Panglong Conference. The group of ethnic leaders included both Nai Tun Thein and Nai Ngwe Thein.

NLD leaders and ethnic minority groups agreed and signed the “Kalay Declaration” on October 24th (the 22nd Anniversary of the Zomi National Congress) advocating for a convening of a Second Panglong Conference in Kalay town, Sagaing Division.

After Daw Aung Suu Kyi release, ethnic groups was sent congratulate formal message to Daw Aung Suu Kyi including New Mon State Party (NMSP).

The first Panglong Conference was held in 1947 before Burma received independence from Britain (in 1948) and was led by General Aung San, Aung San Suu Kyi’s father, and ethnic group leaders. The first Panglong Conference was not attended by Mon party representatives.
