Arka : Mon monk Ashin Uk Kong Sah, who was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison, was transferred today from the infamous Insein prison in Rangoon to Bassein prison in Irrawaddy Division, according to his family.
Ashin Uk Kong Sah informed his sister Mi Thida Win yesterday that would be transferred from Insein prison this morning at about 9:20 am. Mi Thida Win told IMNA that he is set to arrive at Bassein prison tonight.
Mi Thida reported that Ashin did not know the reason of his transfer, and had not received any warning about the move by prison authorities until yesterday.
“Ashin phoned yesterday by calling in front of the prison [Insein]. He didn’t know about transfer to the other prison. He thought he didn’t need to change because he had already changed [where he slept in the prison]. Now it is an immediate change,” she explained.
Ashin was originally given cell No. 2, in room No.1 in Insein during his trial, and was moved to cell No. 5, room No. 4 after the court sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
Mi Thida also reported that Ashin has suffered from a stomach disease, kidney problems, and other health issues since being imprisoned.
Nai Ngwe Thein, Vice Chairman of the Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF) told IMNA that once he is established at Bassein prison, health treatment should be easier for Ashin to obtain; unfortunately Bassein Prison is much further away from his family’s home in Chaung zone Township, Mon State, and family visits will become more difficult.
“From Chaung zone township to Moulmein, from Moulmein to Rangoon, From Rangoon to Bassein; is difficult [to get to] than Insein prison”, Nai Ngwe Thein said.
Ashin was arrested on January 7th, while in possession of leaflets protesting the upcoming 2010 elections, in Thanphyuzayart Township, Mon State. He received his sentence of 15 years in prison this September.
